Aviemore!
It had been over half a year since I was in this beautiful country but still I had to do my best not to let this first day of hiking ruin my life. Our favorite soccer club had to go out against the arch-rival while “we” were going through a legendarily bad period.
I’m not going to mention the result here but so this was idd historically bad but mostly hopeless.
Good news was that our hero Mathieu van der Poel gloriously won Paris – Roubaix so we are going to remind ourselves of that on this day!
Also, of course, the beautiful surroundings and especially wonderful to be outside again for a week.
The circumstances why it took so long this time will be the subject of a separate report but how ridiculously beautiful it is here.
Also, next time definitely plan to get out in Aviemore to see what all has changed there since 1988. Maybe the location where we spent a month then is still there, that would be nice!
0 Munro’s this day:
Zero! so
Flew to Inverness for the first time this adventure. For the last eight adventures, this was Glasgow.
The “why” I explain on
this page
.
Wonderful to be in Inverness again! Had been here before when we spent a month in Aviemore in a previous life. This was now the last stop before I got off in Newtonmore so another great trip down memory lane!
I will scan the best photos from that month of Aviemore (are real, printed, photos now, was in 1988!!! 🫢😀) and post them on the site.
Most Beautiful Video
Of course I was still expecting snow but when I woke up on the morning of the 3rd day and suddenly there was
(the night before everything was still green) there was a pack of snow I thought that was very special.
Beautiful images!
Details
this day
1. Reading glasses
I have a simple list that I go through about 10 times before I go out. In the case of my phone, which is always off when I’m on the road, a small pair of Noozy reading glasses comes standard. On the train I found out that this was not the case, hence the strange streak to the right on the first day 😉. Sunday afternoon, looking for reading glasses in Newtonmore with the benefit of listening to NOS Sports!
(rest of the week, lovely!, no connection and the phone off)
2. New habits
Being in Glasgow feels like coming home.
The hotel, the route to the train station, the outdoor shop where I buy my last gear before going on an adventure. In Inverness I had to find my way around again which, of course, only makes another adventure more fun. Hotel is even closer to the train station and on the way there several outdoor stores!
3. Train ride
From / to Glasgow is also now standard by train, sometimes by bus. This was another new experience with new, and familiar, stops which also made it more fun.
Day 1
Took the train to Aviemore and deliberately did my shopping there.
Day 2
The first Munro.
Day 3
Tent leave (Sunday rest day!) for Munro 2 and 3.
Day 4
With full packs Munro 4 to then set up tent for Munro 5.
Day 5
Again with full packs a Munro to then ditch my pack for Munro 7.
Day 6
Walked into valley last night, pitched tent for a wonderful last day with 4 Munros.
Day 7
Last day hiked out of the valley to hike, via Rothiemurchus Lodge, back to Aviemore station.
First I ate a HUGE burger before taking the train to Inverness.
